Canonical has officially released Ubuntu 24.04.4 LTS, marking the fourth point release of the long-term supported Ubuntu 24.04 LTS (Noble Numbat) series. This update comes six months after the previous release, Ubuntu 24.04.3 LTS, and is intended to serve as an up-to-date installation medium, incorporating all the latest software and security updates. Users can deploy this version on new computers without needing to download numerous updates post-installation.
The new release is powered by Linux kernel 6.17 and features the Mesa 25.2 graphics stack, drawn from the upcoming Ubuntu 25.10 (Questing Quokka) release. Previous iterations of the Ubuntu 24.04 LTS series included older kernels, with 24.04.1 using Linux 6.8, 24.04.2 with 6.11, and 24.04.3 shipped with 6.14. The newer kernel is expected to enhance hardware compatibility, while the updated Mesa graphics stack aims to improve gaming performance.
Users can download Ubuntu 24.04.4 LTS in both Desktop and Server flavors, along with various official Ubuntu flavors such as Kubuntu, Xubuntu, Lubuntu, and more from the official Ubuntu releases page.
Looking ahead, the next point release, Ubuntu 24.04.5 LTS, is anticipated for August 2026. This upcoming release will not include newer kernels or graphics stacks, as Canonical plans to launch a new long-term support series, Ubuntu 26.04 LTS (Resolute Raccoon), in April 2026, which will provide an avenue for users of Ubuntu 24.04 LTS to upgrade.
Importantly, Ubuntu 24.04 LTS will continue to receive software updates and security patches for a minimum of five years, until June 2029. After this period, extended support will be available through Ubuntu Pro for ten years, or up to 15 years with a Legacy subscription.
