Canonical has released the beta version of Ubuntu 25.10, codenamed Questing Quokka, for public testing, previewing what users can expect when the final version is launched on October 9, 2025. This release is powered by the upcoming Linux kernel 6.17 and features the newly released GNOME 49 desktop environment.
Notable changes in Ubuntu 25.10 include the introduction of sudo-rs as the default implementation of sudo and Dracut as the default for initramfs tools. The operating system also incorporates Chrony as the default Network Time Protocol (NTP) client, NVIDIA Dynamic Boost support aimed at gamers, and TPM-backed Full Disk Encryption (FDE) recovery key management.
For initial booting, users will find some new applications: GNOME’s Loupe replaces Eye of GNOME as the default image viewer, and Ptyxis steps in as the new terminal emulator, taking over from GNOME Terminal. The remaining default applications remain unchanged.
One significant enhancement in this version is Ubuntu Insights, designed to give users better control over the non-personally identifying system metrics they share with Canonical. Metrics collection in this feature is opt-in, and previous consents for Ubuntu Report will not carry over.
Under the hood, Ubuntu 25.10 is equipped with an updated toolchain, including GCC 15.2, GNU C Library 2.42, systemd 257.9, and OpenSSL 3.5, alongside the latest Mesa 25.2 graphics stack.
Users interested in testing Ubuntu 25.10 can download the beta version from the official website.
