Linux handheld devices are currently gaining traction, and among them stands the Mecha Comet, a modular Linux computer that is currently crowdfunding on Kickstarter.
The Mecha Comet is designed not to replicate your phone or laptop but to offer versatility. This palm-sized computer features three detachable modules, allowing it to function as a gamepad, a GPIO header catering to tinkerers, or a compact QWERTY keyboard with a trackpad for on-the-go computing.
One of the standout features of the Mecha Comet is its open hardware and software nature, enabling tech enthusiasts to create and share their own custom expansion modules.
This ARM-based device boasts a 3.92-inch AMOLED touch display with a pixel density of 441 ppi. It comes in two configurations powered by NXP ARM SoCs: a base model featuring a 4-core i.MX 8M Plus, and a higher-end model with a 6-core i.MX 95, which provides double the GPU performance at the cost of reduced battery life.
The Mecha Comet includes several memory options starting from 2GB of RAM and up to 8GB, with eMMC storage ranging from 64GB to 128GB, plus additional MicroSD and M.2 SSD slots for extra storage.
Connectivity features include a mini HDMI 2.1 port, an 8MP camera, dual microphones, an integrated speaker, a 3.5mm audio jack, and dual USB-C ports. It supports Wi-Fi 5 and Bluetooth 5.4, along with a physical SIM card slot.
The device runs on open-source software, specifically a Fedora-based OS named Mechanix, which features a touch-optimized GUI. Native applications are created using Flutter-based Dart toolkit, and users can also install any compatible Linux applications.
All hardware is open-source under the CERN-OHL-S-2.0 license, meaning users can access component schematics and even print their own customizations for the keyboard and other parts.
The Mecha Comet is offered starting at $189 for the basic model with i.MX 8M Plus, while the upgraded version with i.MX 95 starts at $269. Various additional modules and upgrades are available, with shipping costs ranging from $18 to $40.
The i.MX 8M Plus model is expected to ship in May/June 2026, while the i.MX 95 models will follow by September 2026. The project has already raised over $500,000 within just a few days on Kickstarter.
