Google is working on a Linux terminal app specifically designed for Android development, which marks a significant leap for developers using Android devices. Currently, while Android includes a sandboxed Linux terminal for running various commands, this new app will enable developers to build Android applications directly on their devices, eliminating the need for emulators that run on desktop systems.
This forthcoming Linux terminal app will utilize the Android Virtualization Framework to launch a Debian image in a virtual machine. Such functionality will offer developers a fully-fledged Linux development environment, complete with necessary tools like Android Studio.
Despite the promising capabilities of this new app, there will be an immediate challenge. Android Studio, which is essential for building native applications, is not yet compatible with ARM-based CPUs, which means it can’t currently operate within this Linux environment on Android devices. Google will need to add ARM support to the Linux version of Android Studio for full functionality.
Additionally, recent reports have indicated that the latest Android Canary build includes support for running Linux graphical applications. This development could allow the execution of software like Chromium, GIMP, and LibreOffice on Android devices, broadening the scope of what users can do on their phones or tablets. The potential for utilizing an Android device alongside a desktop monitor, keyboard, and mouse presents exciting possibilities for developers, especially with the anticipated merging of Android and ChromeOS.
As of now, there is no specified release date for this feature. However, it is expected that Pixel devices will be the first to receive the update.
