When I downloaded GLF OS, I thought I was familiar with its gaming-centered focus, as it’s part of a broader Linux gaming community. However, during the installation, I discovered an unexpected option: installing DaVinci Resolve, which piqued my interest because it is usually complicated to set up on Linux. The specified requirement for the app—an Nvidia GPU—was a red flag, given that DaVinci Resolve is officially supported only on Rocky Linux.
The installation presented several edition options:
I opted for the Studio Pro edition, and the installation process was anything but smooth.
My initial installation attempt resulted in a crash. Unsure of the problem, I restarted and faced similar issues. After various attempts with different virtual machines (initially using KVM, then switching to VirtualBox) and adjusting RAM settings, the installations still froze at varying points.
The crux of the problem stems from NixOS, the foundation for GLF OS, which tries to download every single package during installation—a known issue. Finally, I successfully installed the Minimal Edition, believing it might require fewer resources. Testing with a spare physical machine for the Studio Pro installation also yielded success despite initial loading concerns.
Once installed, DaVinci Resolve operated seamlessly, exceeding my past experiences on other systems.
Upon logging in, the Gaming-focused Welcome app confirmed that GLF OS aims to simplify gaming on Linux. However, without pre-installed gaming applications on the Mini version, I found myself lacking tools. The new Easy Flatpak app came in handy for finding and installing gaming software effortlessly, allowing me to browse and cart multiple applications for installation at once.
After a reboot, Steam worked as expected.
Despite the complicated installation process reminiscent of traditional Linux distributions like Gentoo, I was thoroughly impressed with GLF OS once up and running. It appears particularly designed for gamers and content creators, making it a compelling option if one has the right hardware.
If you’re considering diving into GLF OS, be prepared for a challenging setup, but the potential rewards for gaming and creative work are worthwhile.
