MX Linux 25 Release Candidate: Exciting Improvements and Changes Unveiled

The MX Linux team has released the Release Candidate (RC1) for the upcoming MX Linux 25 distribution, which is based on Debian 13 "Trixie." This version includes several improvements and modifications aimed at enhancing user experience, especially in handling encrypted home partitions through the introduction of systemd-cryptsetup on the systemd-based ISOs.

MX Linux 25 RC1 retains the long-term supported Linux 6.12 LTS kernel in standard editions, while the Advanced Hardware Support (AHS) editions feature a Liquorix-flavored Linux 6.15 kernel. Users will also notice an updated Conky configuration, which allows for a choice between 12-hour (AM/PM) and 24-hour time display, reflecting user locale preferences.

In addition to these updates, MX Linux 25 incorporates new themes such as mx-ease and mx-matcha, improving the overall aesthetic appeal of the desktop. It modernizes the live-kernel-updater to filter out Memtest from kernel options. The live-usb-maker utility has also been enhanced to enable a functional “update” mode.

The Nvidia installer has seen refinements, which include a fallback mode that enhances compatibility with Wayland and updates to the mx-updater utility to ensure that automatic updates operate effectively. Moreover, this release addresses a display issue within the GRUB bootloader for older Intel graphics hardware, updates the default .bashrc file, and introduces fixes for several MX tools, including service-manager.

The Xfce edition of MX Linux 25 RC1 features an improved Whisker Menu, while the KDE Plasma edition enhances functionality with root actions and additional service menus in the Dolphin file manager. Furthermore, the Fluxbox edition received several adjustments, like switching the default audio player from DeaDBeeF to Audacious and refining toolbar configurations.

For those interested in testing the release, the live ISO images containing Xfce 4.20, KDE Plasma 6.3.6, and Fluxbox 1.3.7 are now available. However, it is important to note that this pre-release version should not be used in production environments, and feedback regarding the installer, including for traditional installations with EXT4 and Btrfs filesystems, is highly encouraged.
