The Devuan developers have announced the release of Devuan GNU+Linux 6.1, a point release of their systemd-free distribution based on Debian. This update, known as Excalibur, aims to cater to those who prefer software freedom without the inclusion of systemd and its associates.
Devuan 6.1 is a minor update that builds on Debian 13.2 “Trixie” and offers refinements such as better installation processes for speech-synthesis packages and bug fixes for the SLiM login manager. Notably, this release also introduces unofficial images tailored for Raspberry Pi single-board computers. These images support various Raspberry Pi models, including the new Raspberry Pi 5.
Initially launched in November 2025 as Devuan 6.0, this system is powered by the long-term supported Linux kernel 6.12 LTS. The recent update maintains this kernel while also featuring enhancements like a merged /usr file system and support for the PipeWire media server. However, it has reduced support for i386 architecture by discontinuing the i386 installer ISO.
Devuan GNU+Linux 6.1 is now available for download from the official website in various formats, including installation and live images. It remains compatible with multiple architectures, including i386, amd64, armel, armhf, arm64, ppc64el, and riscv64. Existing users can upgrade their installations using:
