GNOME 49.3 Desktop: A New Release Packed with Enhancements and Bug Fixes

The GNOME Project has officially released GNOME 49.3, marking the third point release in the GNOME 49 "Brescia" desktop environment series. This update, arriving approximately a month and a half after GNOME 49.2, introduces various improvements and addresses numerous bugs.

A significant enhancement in this release is the update to the Nautilus (Files) file manager. It is now optimized to efficiently handle images with extreme dimensions, avoiding unnecessary resource consumption. The display will also refresh when the screen scale factor changes, and potential issues with outdated view items have been resolved.

The Settings application (GNOME Control Center) has seen several fixes including better handling of app filter changes in the Applications panel and improvements in timezone searches within the Date and Time panel. Additional tweaks involve increasing the height of the input dialog in the Keyboard panel and ensuring a reliable setting for system locales in the Region panel.

Further enhancements are also present in GNOME Software 49.3, which improves the presentation of long repository names and resolves several issues related to update history, especially for rpm-ostree systems.

GNOME Maps has also been updated, featuring a refined station icon for the Great Britain National Rail stations and a fix for a freezing bug that occurred under certain screen-moving conditions.

The Loupe image viewer has received performance enhancements, along with fixes for zoom functionalities and issues related to actions like copying images. Similarly, GNOME Sudoku and Quadrapassel games have undergone updates that enhance user experience through new features and bug fixes.

The Orca screen reader was updated to version 49.5, tackling issues such as double presentations of lines with new line characters and improving overall accessibility during password input. Snapshot camera app and Papers document viewer have also received notable fixes in their latest updates.

This release also includes numerous bug fixes and language updates across various other GNOME applications like GNOME Remote Desktop, GNOME Console, Gnote, and GNOME Calendar.

For users on the GNOME 49 desktop series, it is advised to check your Linux distribution’s stable software repositories for the availability of GNOME 49.3 packages. The subsequent point release, GNOME 49.4, is anticipated to arrive in early February 2026.
