Key highlights of GNU Guix 1.5 include the inclusion of the GNU Linux-libre 6.17 kernel and support for the KDE Plasma 6.5 desktop environment, which now comes with a new plasma-desktop-service-type service and defaults to using Wayland. Additionally, the latest version also supports GNOME 46, with improvements to the gnome-desktop-service-type that allows for greater customization of GNOME applications.
This version introduces approximately 40 new system services, including Forgejo Runner, RabbitMQ, and iwd, alongside the release of GNU Shepherd 1.0. This update contains various features, such as support for timed services and improved logging mechanisms, which contribute to a more robust system administration experience.
Other changes in this version include the replacement of the outdated setuid-programs tool with privileged-programs for enhanced security options. The nss-certs package has been included in the %base-packages, and over 12,500 additional packages have been added to the repository.
