Linux hardware vendor System76 has launched COSMIC 1.0.5, a substantial update to its Rust-based desktop environment designed for Pop!_OS Linux among other GNU/Linux distributions.
This version introduces a noteworthy feature: a new option to display the battery percentage on laptops directly in the system tray applet. In addition, it implements keyboard shortcuts for enhanced productivity, such as Ctrl+C for copying to the clipboard and Ctrl+S for saving files to the Pictures folder. Additionally, users can now drag and drop tabs within the COSMIC Files file manager.
Other improvements include updates to COSMIC Settings for more reliable network authentication and better handling of user-defined XKB layouts. Fixes have also been made regarding the rotation frequency of wallpaper slideshows and empty dropdown labels if no default applications exist.
In terms of usability, COSMIC 1.0.5 has addressed ligature support in the COSMIC Edit text editor and COSMIC Term terminal emulator. It now supports SVG app icons in the COSMIC Launcher and includes a new Ctrl+Q keyboard shortcut for exiting applications. The update also improves how system and Flatpak runtime updates are displayed in the COSMIC Store.
Some performance enhancements and minor bug fixes are included in this release as well. Users interested in the full release notes can find them on the project’s GitHub page, where they can also download the source tarball if they wish to compile COSMIC on their own Linux distribution.
