Epic Games has confirmed that Fortnite is coming to Linux, where it will be the first game to test a new version of the company’s Easy Anti-Cheat software. However, the announcement does not guarantee that the game will run on Valve’s Steam Deck.
Fortnite has remained unavailable on Linux amid concerns about cheating, even as Linux gaming has grown more popular. Epic says its redesigned anti-cheat system is intended to bring Linux protection closer to what is available on Windows.
Epic announced Easy Anti-Cheat Linux v2 on October 14. The system will use Linux security features such as Secure Boot, TPM 2.0, signed kernels and measured boot to help combat cheating.
Epic plans to test the technology in Fortnite before making it available to other developers. Unlike its Windows counterpart, the Linux version won’t require a dedicated anti-cheat kernel driver. Instead, it will rely on existing security features and a service that runs while a protected game is active.
Epic has not provided a release date for Fortnite on Linux and says it is continuing to work with Linux distribution developers on compatibility.
The Steam Deck currently lacks features required by Epic’s new anti-cheat system. Epic says it is working with Valve and hopes to support the handheld in the future, but Fortnite’s Linux release does not mean Steam Deck players will automatically be able to install and play the game.
Some Linux distributions may also need additional configuration to meet EAC Linux v2’s requirements. Epic says players who don’t meet them will see an error message rather than being banned.
Until native support arrives, players can use cloud gaming services such as GeForce Now or Xbox Cloud Gaming.
