The Alpine Linux team has announced the release of Alpine Linux 3.22, enhancing this independent, security-focused GNU/Linux distribution. It comes powered by Linux kernel 6.12 LTS and introduces notable upgrades, including support for the latest GNOME 48, KDE Plasma 6.3, and LXQt 2.2 desktop environments. This release also marks the replacement of the gummiboot (previously known as systemd-boot) with systemd-efistub.
The transition to systemd-efistub brings changes to the secureboot-hook, which no longer supports gummiboot-efistub and defaults to the new system. Users are advised that if they haven’t altered the efistub_file in /etc/kernel-hooks.d/secureboot.conf, they won’t need to take any action, as the prior gummiboot-efistub is now deprecated and moved to testing.
Alpine Linux 3.22 is equipped with contemporary components like LLVM 20, Dovecot 2.4, nginx 1.28, Node.js 22.16 LTS, Ruby 3.4, Rust 1.87, Xen 4.20, BIRD 3.1, Crystal 1.16, Docker 28, and Go 1.24. Detailed changes can be found on the release announcement page.
The new version is currently available for download from the official website in various formats, including Standard, Extended, Netboot, Raspberry Pi, and multiple architecture editions, such as 64-bit (x86_64) and AArch64 (ARM64).
