The Tails project has released version 7.10 of its Linux distribution, focused on preserving user anonymity while browsing the internet through the Tor network. Key updates in this version include a revamped shutdown process and the introduction of a new video player named Celluloid.
In an effort to bolster data safety, Tails has adopted Gnome’s default shutdown procedure, which may take slightly longer but minimizes the risk of data loss. Previously, if an application needed to be closed or an open document saved, the shutdown could proceed without confirmation, potentially resulting in lost data. Now, if there is no user input, the system shutdown will pause for 60 seconds; however, the emergency shutdown remains unaffected and is still operational.
The new video player, Celluloid, replaces the older Gnome Videos. This change is aimed at enhancing user experience with a more modern and reliable interface. Notably, Celluloid does not connect to the network for security reasons, meaning users will need to use the Tor Browser for online content (e.g., MP4 or AVI files). For streaming content, VLC can be used, but it must be installed separately, particularly as Celluloid is not compatible with older hardware manufactured in 2011 or earlier.
In addition to these features, Tails 7.10 also includes updates to core modules such as the Tor Browser, which has been upgraded to version 15.0.19. Additional firmware updates improve support for newer hardware, including Wi-Fi dongles and graphics cards.
Tails version 7.10 can be downloaded as an image for USB sticks or as an ISO file for DVD installation or use in virtual machines.
