Renowned Linux kernel maintainer Greg Kroah-Hartman announced that several Long-Term Support (LTS) kernels are set to receive extended long-term support, enhancing their lifespans significantly. Currently, six LTS kernels, including Linux 5.10, 5.15, 6.1, 6.6, 6.12, and the newly released Linux 6.18, provide security updates for up to six years.
Per the latest updates, both Linux 6.6 and 6.12 will now be supported for four years, stretching their support until December 2027 and December 2028, respectively. Meanwhile, Linux 6.18 will be supported for at least three years, extending its support until December 2028, instead of the previously planned two years.
In Kroah-Hartman’s Mastodon post, he mentioned, “After talking with a bunch of different companies/groups, we’ve now bumped the length of a few of the long-term kernels we are supporting.” This extension in support is great news for device manufacturers looking to ship Linux-based operating systems with stable kernels, and it benefits home users and hosting companies seeking a reliable platform.
For those wanting the latest features, the latest kernel, Linux 6.19, is available, albeit with a limited support period. It will be succeeded by Linux 7.0 in April 2026, with weekly Release Candidate milestones already available for testing.
