Mozilla has released Firefox 141 to the beta channel for public testing. This release follows the promotion of Firefox 140 to the stable channel as the latest Extended Support Release (ESR).
Firefox 141 is poised to enhance memory usage on Linux systems and eliminates the need for a forced restart when updates are applied via the package manager. Among the new features, users can now drag tabs to and from the pinned tabs tray, improving tab management. Additionally, the customization options on the New Tab page have been refined, replacing the wheel icon with a dynamic “Customize” button.
For web developers, Firefox 141 reintroduces support for Cookies Having Independent Partitioned State (CHIPS) and implements the closedby attribute, which helps ensure that private details from previous sessions are not exposed after a user signs out. The update includes support for the webkitdirectory attribute, enhancing functionalities for Firefox on Android.
Add-on developers will benefit from the i18n.getPreferredSystemLanguages method, which retrieves the system’s preferred locales, complementing existing localization methods.
Firefox 141 is scheduled for general release on July 22, 2025. Until then, interested users can download the beta version from the official website, though it is advised not to use it for production environments.
