A gaming laptop that had been used mainly for WSL became the foundation for a dedicated Linux pixel-art workstation. The idea came while considering the cost of building a new machine with a Raspberry Pi: the laptop was already powerful enough, and a separate Windows desktop handled Adobe software. There was little reason to keep the laptop on WSL or build another computer.
The two candidates were Pop!_OS and Ubuntu 24.04 LTS. Pop!_OS offered an NVIDIA-ready installer and useful window tiling, while Ubuntu appealed for its hardware support, graphics stack, and status as a widely supported Linux standard. After trying both, the author chose Ubuntu.
The laptop was already high-end, but the goal was to avoid even small pauses while working on large pixel-art canvases. A few system settings were changed to prioritize responsiveness:
/tmp, speeding up temporary processing and cache access.vm.swappiness=10 was set to reduce unnecessary swapping to storage.vm.vfs_cache_pressure=50 was used to retain filesystem cache longer when working with large image files.The author bought Aseprite through Steam and installed its Linux version. Steam’s growing investment in Linux support has helped make the graphics environment more stable and responsive. The author particularly noticed the smooth brush input on large canvases, along with the convenience of Steam updates and cloud saves.
The laptop now boots in seconds and is ready for Aseprite almost immediately. Loading and saving 7,500 × 9,000-pixel canvases is quick, and drawing with a 16 × 16-pixel brush feels responsive. The result is a machine tailored to pixel art, with the added appeal of being able to customize the system to suit the author’s preferences.
