The Kodi Foundation has released the second alpha version of Kodi 22, codenamed "Piers," alongside the latest stable release, Kodi 21.3. This major update introduces significant improvements and features aimed at enhancing the media center experience.
With Kodi 22 alpha 2, users will benefit from support for FFmpeg 8, alongside HEIF/HEIC support for better image handling. New sections have also been added to the Library, allowing users to browse Season Plots, as well as the Original Language for Movies and TV Shows. Additionally, a new Weather Skinning API and a dialog explaining microphone permissions for Android users are included.
This version also enhances audio channel handling, allows the setting of available fanart, improves the playback of streams with over 256 audio/video/subtitle tracks, and refines subtitle selection for "forced_only" subtitles. Moreover, users can now run multiple instances of Kodi on Windows systems, offering greater flexibility.
For users of LG webOS, improvements in the media pipeline address issues with overly bright subtitles and the graphical interface when playing HDR/DolbyVision content. The update also resolves a bug from the first alpha version that caused scanning to fail in the presence of local NFO files. Support for Python has also been upgraded to version 3.13.7.
For those interested in testing the alpha, the release can be downloaded and compiled from the project’s GitHub page. However, it is recommended to use this pre-release version cautiously, as it is not meant for production environments.
