Linux Mint is set to introduce two exciting new desktop applications later this year: a calendar app and an eBook reader, named Clockenstein and Xepub, respectively. In addition, the existing Library application has been revamped to enhance document management.
The new calendar application, referred to in development as Clockenstein, will simply be labeled Calendar for users. This new tool replaces the outdated GNOME Calendar and allows users to browse dates, add events, and create task-based calendars. A significant feature includes offline capabilities and the option to sync with online providers such as Google Calendar or Nextcloud through CalDAV.
The application is designed to keep users informed of any issues with online sync, ensuring that reminders for important events are never missed. A background daemon will work to maintain sync with remote calendars and notify users of upcoming events.
The Xepub app, designed for ePub files, aims to deliver an engaging reading experience similar to that of a Kindle or Kobo. It will include essential features such as chapter and page navigation, full-text search, bookmarks, adjustable zoom, and annotation capabilities. Moreover, users will be able to look up words directly through integrated search engines.
The Library application has undergone a redesign, making it easier for users to locate and manage their documents. Rather than being categorized by the applications that open them, documents will now be displayed based on file types. Users can create custom groups for a tailored experience, enhancing the overall organization of documents.
The new Book Reader and Calendar apps are expected to debut with Linux Mint 23, anticipated by the end of the year, along with the improved Library app. Users eager to try out these applications sooner can access their source code on GitHub.
