Linux Mint is enhancing its approach to kernel management by introducing automatic deletion of old kernels once a week. This change will transition kernel management from the Update Manager to the System Administration tool, applicable to both standard and LMDE versions. Users can now track kernel series instead of individual versions and choose how many older kernels to retain, including the one currently in use.
Updates for tracked kernel versions will still be shown in the Update Manager, but any unused old kernels will be automatically removed. Additionally, there will be a manual ‘Clean up’ button for users to free up space right away, while a ‘History’ button allows users to track which kernels have been deleted.
The new system also grants users the option to mark specific kernels as ‘Protected’, preventing their deletion. If a kernel from another series is installed, the tool will offer tracking options to install related meta-packages and future updates.
This overhaul addresses the concern of disk space by clearing out older kernels that are no longer necessary. Users may be surprised by how many versions can accumulate over time since kernel updates are frequent and previous versions often remain installed.
It’s currently unclear whether these changes will be made available to existing Linux Mint 22.3 and LMDE users as part of a software update or if they will only appear in the upcoming Linux Mint 23 release, scheduled for the end of the year.
