Back in the late ’90s, installing Linux was a hands-on experience reminiscent of crafting a custom-built piece of software, and if that’s what you miss, Fedora Everything could be your answer.
Fedora Everything reinvigorates that DIY spirit of Linux installations by allowing you to decide precisely which software to install, harking back to the times when the process was more involved than today’s automated systems. In those days, each installation required users to sift through packages and select exactly what they wanted. Forgetting even a minor component could result in having to restart the entire process. Despite this, the satisfaction of building a personalized OS was unmatched.
In today’s world, Linux distributions have simplified processes, leading to larger ISOs filled with bundled software to save users from having to install apps separately. But that might not suit everyone.
Fedora Everything offers a solution through its netinstaller, which is smaller (just 1.2 GB compared to many full ISOs) and requires an online connection. It allows users to customize installations by choosing only the packages needed during the installation phase.
User experience during the installation mirrors that of regular Fedora but comes with extensive software options right from the start. Users can select desired collections of software or add specific applications to meet their needs, thus crafting a tailored environment.
During testing with Fedora Everything, users can create a desktop environment from scratch, adding tools for network management, utilities, and productivity software all in one go. While the initial setup may take a bit longer due to the online nature, the control it offers is significant.
Once the installation is complete, users are greeted by the aesthetic and functional benefits of the COSMIC Desktop. The anticipated applications, including unexpected gems from curated packages, often already installed, enhance the experience.
Fedora Everything strikes an excellent balance between modern efficiency and the nostalgic customizability many longtime Linux users crave. Overall, it’s a highly recommended option for those who prefer a personalized touch in their operating system setup.
