A newly identified vulnerability in major Linux distributions, dubbed "Copy Fail," has garnered significant attention from the US Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Agency (CISA), leading to its addition to the Known Exploited Vulnerabilities (KEV) catalog. This flaw poses substantial risks, especially to environments with critical systems. The vulnerability has been reported to potentially affect any open-source Linux distribution released since 2017.
Researcher Miguel Angel Duran highlighted that this vulnerability enables malicious actors with access to the system to escalate their privileges and gain root access using just "10 lines of Python" code. Duran referred to the flaw as "insane," given its simplicity and potential impact on widely-used systems like cryptocurrency exchanges and custodial services, which rely on the Linux operating system for its robustness.
The flaw was first reported by cybersecurity firm Theori, whose CEO, Brian Pak, revealed that they had privately notified the Linux kernel security team on March 23. Collaborative efforts resulted in patches, which went live on April 1, and the vulnerability was publicly disclosed on April 29. The exploit is described as a trivial logic bug, easily exploitable and applicable across all major Linux distributions released in the past nine years.
