The openSUSE project has launched the beta version of openSUSE Leap 16, marking a significant step as the operating system is set for public testing. This new version is powered by the Linux kernel 6.12 LTS and is based on SUSE’s innovative Adaptable Linux Platform (ALP). Users can expect a blend of cutting-edge features and a stable Linux environment.
One of the highlights of Leap 16 is the introduction of the Agama installer, which has been developed by the same team responsible for the popular YaST tool. The Agama installer aims to enhance usability and integration with third-party applications and can also facilitate the installation of various openSUSE editions, including Tumbleweed and MicroOS.
Currently, the Agama installer provides three installation options: Base (default), GNOME, and KDE. This allows users to choose between installing Leap 16 as a server without a graphical interface or as a workstation featuring either GNOME 47 or KDE Plasma 6.3, both of which are Wayland-only.
In terms of security, openSUSE Leap 16 has opted to replace AppArmor with SELinux as the default mandatory access control system. This change is seen as beneficial, especially for environments requiring heightened security measures, as SELinux enjoys a more extensive community and development support.
Additional features include RIS-based repository management segmented by architecture for quicker metadata processing and enhanced refresh speeds, the capability for parallel package downloads using Zypper, system management through Cockpit, and Myrlyn as a replacement for YaST.
Users interested in trying out the beta version can download it from the official website. Caution is advised, as this pre-release version is not suitable for production use. The official launch of openSUSE Leap 16 is expected later this year, likely around October 2025, with the promise of a seamless upgrade process for existing users and a clear migration pathway for Leap Micro users.
