Inkscape has officially released version 1.4.2, marking it as the first maintenance update of the Inkscape 1.4 series. This open-source, cross-platform SVG editor is available for Linux, macOS, and Windows.
The new release introduces several enhancements, including a new splash screen and initial support for importing Vectornator/Linearity Curve files. Additionally, a new extension for the Clean Up Paths feature allows users to remove duplicate nodes and those that are closer than a specified threshold. The capability to import Affinity Designer (.afdesign) files has also been improved.
For Linux users, various bug fixes have been implemented, addressing a crash related to drag-and-drop actions with the Snap version of Inkscape, issues with drag-and-drop in the Layers dialog for KDE Plasma on Wayland, and problems within the Export dialog of the Snap package.
Notable technical additions include improvements in DXF12 export to include color when saving files and the ability to preserve colors in POLYLINE objects when loading DXF files. Other enhancements include adding support for negative bleed values in the Printing Marks extension and refining PDF importing for better handling of consecutive clippings.
Inkscape’s modular grid feature now defaults to rendering with an inverted Y-axis. The status bar hints regarding guides have been updated, and irrelevant alignment options have been correctly hidden. Additionally, colors of Asian patterns can now be modified.
Other updates include fixes for discrepancies in the man page commands, an argument parsing issue with Python 3.14, and enhancements to various keyboard shortcuts. Documentation on setting icons for extensions in the gallery has been added, and the shell --export-page=all
command has been adjusted for proper page exports.
Inkscape can now accurately import .ase color palettes using the LAB color space and resolves issues related to the Calligraphy tool and the Shape Builder’s handling of intersecting shapes.
You can find more detailed information in the release notes. Inkscape 1.4.2 is available for download as an AppImage from the official website, enabling use across various GNU/Linux distributions without the need for installation.
