DeckCraft is a free, open-source presentation app designed as a PowerPoint alternative. It runs on Linux, macOS, and Windows, and offers a familiar interface and workflow for anyone accustomed to Microsoft’s presentation software.
After trying it alongside LibreOffice Impress and Google Slides, I found DeckCraft easier to use and more capable. Tasks that took longer in Impress were quicker in DeckCraft, and the finished slides looked closer to what I intended.
Adding animations in Impress can be frustrating: effects may behave unpredictably, and getting them right can take time. In DeckCraft, you select an element, choose an animation, adjust its timing, and preview the result. In my experience, the animations worked reliably.
I also created the same presentation in both apps. DeckCraft took about half as long, and its slides displayed as expected. In Impress, an image overlapped text despite using the same settings.
DeckCraft’s Design Ideas feature offers alternative slide layouts with a click. It can help improve a presentation’s appearance without requiring a complete redesign. The app also includes slide transitions that are straightforward to apply.
DeckCraft was easy to learn, even after a long time away from PowerPoint. I was able to create polished presentations quickly, and found its workflow more intuitive than Impress or Google Slides.
For anyone looking for a free presentation tool that works across Linux, macOS, and Windows, DeckCraft is worth trying.
