Mozilla has announced that it will discontinue support for Firefox on 32-bit Linux systems, with the last version to be Firefox 144, which is scheduled for release on October 14, 2025. After this version, there will be no further updates or support for 32-bit versions, meaning that users relying on these systems will no longer have access to the browser. Firefox 145, set to be rolled out on November 11, 2025, will only be available in a 64-bit version.
The decision comes in light of the dwindling number of major Linux distributions that still offer 32-bit support. For instance, many popular distributions like Ubuntu and Fedora have already eliminated 32-bit versions, making maintenance of Firefox for these systems increasingly challenging and unreliable.
Mozilla urges current users of Firefox on 32-bit Linux to transition to a 64-bit operating system to ensure they can continue to receive updates and support for Firefox. Users on older Debian-based systems, particularly those using Debian 12 or earlier, are most affected by this change, as Debian 13 has also dropped 32-bit support.
For those unable to upgrade immediately, Mozilla has extended support for the Extended Support Release (ESR) version 140, which will receive security updates for 32-bit Linux systems until at least September 2026. This late move by Mozilla mirrors Google’s earlier decision in March 2016 to discontinue Chrome’s support for i386 systems.
