The KDE Project has released KDE Frameworks 6.18, a notable update aimed at enhancing user experience across its applications and the Plasma desktop. This release introduces the ability to utilize the Copilot key found on laptops for launching apps or executing actions where keyboard shortcuts are applicable. While binding the Copilot key to mimic another key is not yet supported, development efforts are underway to enable this feature.
KDE Frameworks 6.18 also brings improvements like better loading visuals for toolbars, automatic inhibition of sleep and screen locking for tasks registered with Plasma’s job tracker, and an updated “New Folder” dialog that word-wraps long paths. Additionally, it optimizes performance and memory usage in Kirigami-based apps and System Settings, significantly speeding up thumbnail generation across all KDE applications and the Plasma desktop.
An interesting change in this release is the removal of colorful third-party app icons from the Breeze icon theme due to a lack of resources to maintain them and a desire to respect the branding of third-party applications. KDE developer Nate Graham acknowledged that while this was a difficult decision, it was essential to avoid overriding the branding created by app developers.
KDE Frameworks 6.18 also includes several bug fixes, addressing issues with incorrect sizing of Plasma System Monitor Sensor widgets, crashes during file operations between Dolphin and the desktop, and stability problems in Kirigami apps.
Users are encouraged to check their respective GNU/Linux distribution’s stable software repositories for the KDE Frameworks 6.18 packages and to update their installations promptly, particularly if they are utilizing the KDE Plasma desktop environment or KDE applications.
