The Linux Foundation is set to establish the React Foundation, a dedicated entity for managing the popular React and React Native libraries, which were previously under Meta’s stewardship. This move aims to provide a neutral and community-led environment for these technologies, ensuring their continued growth and innovation, according to Jim Zemlin, executive director of the Linux Foundation.
Announced on October 7, the React Foundation will serve as a home for the React ecosystem, which is crucial for front-end development, being utilized by around 55 million websites worldwide. React is primarily recognized for developing dynamic and interactive web applications, while React Native extends these capabilities to mobile apps.
Historically, React was developed by Facebook, which later rebranded itself to Meta in 2021. The foundation will include notable founding members such as Amazon, Callstack, Expo, Meta, Microsoft, Software Mansion, and Vercel. Its primary responsibilities will involve governance, infrastructure management, event organization, and development of programs aimed at fostering global collaboration within the community. Seth Webster, the head of React at Meta, will lead the new foundation as its executive director.
This transition from Meta to the React Foundation is expected to accelerate the momentum of React as a preeminent open-source technology for developers, thereby enhancing its usefulness for building modern web and mobile applications.
