After a significant period of development, SuperTuxKart 1.5 has officially launched as the latest version of this open-source, cross-platform kart racing game. This release follows three years after the previous version, SuperTuxKart 1.4, and introduces a range of exciting features and improvements.
Among the highlights of version 1.5 is the new benchmark mode, along with Level of Detail (LoD) settings that help reduce graphical “popping.” The game has enhanced audio management, giving players finer control of the audio levels. Additionally, new egg hunts have been added across various tracks, including Black Forest, Gran Paradisio Island, and The Old Mine.
Graphical enhancements are prominent, particularly in the overworld, marking the farewell to the 1.x Story Mode. Updates to the Vulkan renderer also improve the display of karts, tracks, and game modes. Players with high-end GPUs can benefit from SSAA (Super Sampling Anti-Aliasing) and Percentage-Closer Soft Shadows.
Animation improvements include refines to the parachute and bubblegum shield, as players can now configure the maximum FPS directly in the game settings rather than facing fixed limits of 120 FPS for PCs and 30 FPS for Android devices. The update also introduces new fonts for better language support.
Other enhancements include new music tracks for the Las Dunas Arena and Las Dunas Soccer arenas, indicators for eliminations in the Follow-The-Leader mode, and improvements in framerate limiting accuracy. For legacy video driver support, graphical effects have been added, which enhance Cascaded Shadow Mapping and optimize scene node performance.
SuperTuxKart 1.5 can be downloaded immediately for 64-bit or AArch64 (ARM64) GNU/Linux systems through the project’s GitHub page. Alternatively, the game is available for installation as a Flatpak app from Flathub.
