Grml, a live bootable Linux distribution, has announced its new version 2025.12, based on Debian Testing/Forky and powered by Linux kernel 6.17. This update, codenamed Postwurfsendung, introduces a plethora of new and updated tools aimed at system administrators and users who work primarily with text tools.
The release enhances the grml-live build system to facilitate the creation of Grml-based live systems, incorporating a new TOR class and support for the grml-desktop package. Additionally, the minimum host operating system has been updated to Debian Bookworm.
This version also sees the removal of outdated console scripts from grml-scripts, including grepc, grepedit, iimage, and others. Meanwhile, the grml-zshrc Zsh configuration has been modified to allow syncing of global aliases from zshrc.local.
Three new packages have been introduced: firmware-mediatek, gosop (as a dependency for devscripts, replacing sopv-gpgv), and ImageMagick, which offers a drop-in replacement for GraphicsMagick. A total of eleven Debian packages have been removed or replaced for improved functionality.
Further changes in Grml 2025.12 include the removal of GRUB 0.x and early syslinux support from the grml2usb tool, an updated grml-hwinfo utility that now collects UPower information, and various bug fixes based on reported issues.
