The Linux distribution Linux Mint has announced the release of version 22.3, codenamed "Zena". This new version builds upon the Ubuntu foundation, introducing various software updates and improvements aimed at enhancing the Linux desktop experience.
The release notes discuss numerous issues encountered in previous versions and provide solutions. Key improvements include an extended support period, with security updates offered until April 2029. The updated distribution focuses on facilitating problem resolution through optimizations such as renaming the "System Report" tool to "System Information" and adding several new informational pages about connected USB devices, graphics card support, PCI devices, and BIOS.
Another significant addition is the new tool "System Administration," which operates with administrator privileges for system configuration tasks; initially, this tool allows users to configure the boot menu. Additionally, users will now see a notification icon indicating missed app messages, making it easier to keep track of updates.
Visual elements have also been enhanced. XApps now feature new default icons that are simple and monochrome, designed to scale without loss of quality. Improvements were made to Timeshift, which allows users to pause or resume snapshots, and Warpinator now also supports the transfer of text messages over the network.
The Cinnamon desktop environment has been updated to version 6.6, which includes improved support for different keyboard layouts and input methods, enabling easier switching between English (US) and other layouts under Wayland. The Cinnamon application menu has seen a revision, now offering a sidebar for user avatars, locations, and preferred applications.
Linux Mint 22.3 ships with the HWE kernel 6.14, which improves hardware compatibility but has been known to conflict with VirtualBox and older Nvidia graphics cards. Users facing issues can revert to Linux Mint 22.1, which includes the LTS kernel 6.8. The shutdown process has been expedited, taking only ten seconds.
To test Linux Mint 22.3 in VirtualBox, users should disable 3D acceleration and enable Nested Paging in the VM settings. However, for proper multimedia playback with gstreamer-1.0-vaapi, 3D acceleration is required, and users may have to remove the package using the command apt remove gstreamer1.0-vaapi.
Installation images for Linux Mint 22.3 can be downloaded from the Linux Mint website. Versions with the Cinnamon, Xfce, and MATE desktop environments are available.
This update follows the previous release, version 22.2, named "Zara," which included biometrics and aesthetic changes to Libadwaita applications.
