If implemented, this adjustment could result in a revised release strategy for Linux Mint 23 later this year, breaking away from the traditional biannual updates for its main edition alongside the Linux Mint Debian Edition (LMDE). Unlike fixed-schedule systems like Ubuntu, which rely on regular release timelines for stability, Linux Mint is considering a more flexible "when it’s ready" approach, similar to the development style of elementaryOS.
Lefebvre believes that a slower pace could enhance Linux Mint’s thoughtful approach to OS development, allowing for increased creativity in future codenames after the recent completion of its alphabetical naming system with Linux Mint 22.3 "Zena."
He emphasizes that while maintaining a six-month update rhythm has facilitated steady improvements, it may also limit the scope of ambitious feature development. Major functional updates are challenging to execute within a constrained schedule, detracting from Linux Mint’s identity as an operating system that focuses on user experience rather than merely a distribution.
Further details regarding the plans for Linux Mint 23 will emerge following the anticipated release of Ubuntu 26.04 LTS in April, which will provide the package base for the forthcoming Mint version.
