Finland’s Jolla, known for its smartphone innovations, is making a notable comeback with plans to launch a new Linux-based phone in late 2026. This “European Phone” seeks to redefine mobile tech independence amidst growing concerns over Big Tech’s influence.
According to Jolla’s CEO, Sami Pienimäki, the new phone will emphasize the importance of software integrity, underscoring that the operating system is compiled directly from source code within Finland. He articulated that this isn’t merely a phone; it’s a symbol of Europe’s capability to create technology on its own terms.
Founded by ex-Nokia and MeeGo engineers, Jolla’s Sailfish OS, built on Linux, offers Android app compatibility without relying on Google’s resources. The company claims there are currently only four significant mobile platforms in the market: Apple iOS, Google Android, Huawei HarmonyOS, and Jolla Sailfish. Jolla stands out by not transmitting user data to any major tech servers.
The new Jolla Phone will feature a mid-range Mediatek Dimensity 7100 5G processor, an option of 8 GB or 12 GB of RAM, and a minimum of 256 GB of expandable storage. It boasts a 6.36-inch Full HD AMOLED display and a robust camera setup, including two rear Sony lenses (50 MP and 13 MP) and a 32 MP front lens. Other amenities include a 5500 mAh battery and various connectivity options such as 4G/5G, Wi-Fi 6, and Bluetooth 5.4.
Additionally, Jolla is reviving its Other Half smart cover platform, which allows users to customize the phone with interchangeable back covers that add unique functionalities like keyboards or e-ink displays.
The starting price for the Jolla Phone is set at €649, with options for upgrades. There’s already a significant interest, with over 10,000 pre-orders amounting to over €5 million, and all final assembly will occur in Salo, Finland, the historical site of Nokia’s manufacturing.
