Android Canary Introduces a Modern UI and Exciting Features for the Linux Terminal

The recent release of Android Canary build 2603 has introduced an array of enhancements to the built-in Linux Terminal found on Google’s Pixel smartphones. While designed with developers in mind, the Terminal is accessible for all users, allowing them to run a variety of Linux applications, including popular games like DOOM. This update suggests Google’s ongoing commitment to expanding support for full-scale Linux apps.

Several improvements have been made to the Terminal’s graphical interface, prominently featured in the new update. Upon installation, users will notice a refreshed interface that includes a centered progress bar and a streamlined toggle for Wi-Fi-only installation. The installation progress is now visually represented as a live activity, enhancing the overall user experience.

While the command line interface maintains a largely similar appearance, one distinction is the straightened edges of the tabs at the top, enhancing the visual presentation. Furthermore, users will find that the buttons for keyboard and touchpad input have been relocated to the top of the interface.

A significant new feature is the addition of the “Advanced” settings menu within the Terminal. This section allows users to set memory limits for the virtual environment, optimizing the use of phone resources, and avoid bottlenecks during operation. Users also have the option to specify how long they wish the screen to remain active, with durations ranging from one minute to 24 hours. This feature is particularly useful for running long processes without the risk of the app being shut down due to inactivity, although users are warned of increased battery drain with prolonged screen activity.

Currently, these features are exclusive to Android Canary and are not available in Android 17 Beta 2 or Android 16 QPR3, making it uncertain when or if they will be rolled out to other Android devices.
