One UI 8.5, the latest update for Samsung’s Exynos-powered Galaxy devices, brings significant enhancements to the Linux Terminal feature, building on the support that Google introduced in Android 16 last year. This upgrade allows users to run a variety of graphical applications, such as GIMP, Chromium, and even games like Doom, via the Terminal. Previously, users were limited to command-line programs.
A key highlight of these updates is the addition of a display icon in the Terminal, enabling the use of graphical apps, which was absent in One UI 8.5’s predecessor. Furthermore, One UI 8.5 introduces “storage ballooning," allowing the Terminal to utilize all available storage from the outset, a marked improvement over the previous version that required users to adjust the disk space manually with a slider.
In terms of storage access, users of One UI 8.5’s Terminal no longer face restrictions of only accessing the Downloads folder. Now, it supports access across all shared storage areas, including DCIM, Movies, Music, and other directories.
Interestingly, the latest version does come with a drawback: the ability to search within developer options has been removed, which may necessitate enabling Terminal access through ADB commands, a more complex process for users.
This upgrade arrives alongside other upcoming enhancements in Android Canary, which are still in the testing phase, including a refreshed interface and more memory management options. However, it’s important to note that the Linux Terminal feature is only available on specific devices equipped with Exynos, MediaTek, or Google Tensor chips, excluding Snapdragon-powered phones.
