The well-known macOS application Little Snitch has expanded its features to Linux, now offering network-monitoring tools. The developers from Objective Development revealed the launch of the Linux version in a blog post, sharing some initial insights from using the app on Linux. For example, they observed that on Ubuntu, nine system processes established internet connections over a week, compared to over 100 on macOS.
However, while the Linux iteration grants users similar abilities to view and disable unwanted connections, it is not marketed as a security tool, unlike its macOS counterpart. Objective Development stated that Linux does not inherently enhance app privacy. For instance, they noted that even with tracking and ads disabled in Firefox—pre-installed on Ubuntu—the browser still connects to various servers.
The developers remarked, “Each app behaves more or less the same way on all supported platforms." They cited that whenever they installed major applications like Thunderbird or Visual Studio Code, the network metrics resembled those seen on other platforms. Interestingly, they highlighted LibreOffice as an exception, which did not make any network connections during testing—an unusual occurrence in today’s environment.
