RakuOS: The Solution to Frustrations with Immutable Linux Distros

RakuOS is an innovative Linux distribution that successfully blends the security of an immutable operating system with the flexibility of traditional Linux package management.

Immutable Linux is known for its heightened security, primarily by designating certain directories as read-only. This functionality prevents unauthorized changes or installations, hence protecting the OS from potential threats. However, this security comes with the limitation that installing new software typically can’t be done through conventional package managers like apt, dnf, or pacman—users often must utilize container-based systems like Flatpak or Snap.

RakuOS addresses this issue by incorporating a hybrid system. It utilizes a persistent overlay system mounted on /usr, allowing users to install native packages that persist through system updates while maintaining a pristine base system. This unique setup means users have the advantages of immutability—such as quick rollbacks on system updates—while still using familiar package management tools.

During my experience with RakuOS, I discovered its user interface resembles that of conventional Linux distributions, featuring the RakuOS Software app store that operates similarly to KDE Plasma’s Discover app. The installation process for software is simplified, allowing me to choose between Flatpak for sandboxed applications or the standard dnf command for traditional installations.

Performance-wise, RakuOS runs on the CachyOS kernel, known for its speed and efficiency. This made for a smooth experience even with demanding applications, like running complex queries with Ollama. I was impressed by how well it handled various tasks, maintaining performance without significant lag.

Curiosity led me to experiment with the "pristine reset" feature, which promises to restore the system to its original state. Initially, I attempted to reset by manually removing the /usr directory, which resulted in boot issues. However, discovering the proper command (sudo rpm-ostree reset) allowed me to restore the system without any hassle.

Overall, RakuOS is a commendable Linux distribution that merges security with user-friendly practices. It caters to both casual users and those who may benefit significantly from its advanced features. Users interested in an OS that balances usability with robust security measures should consider trying RakuOS. You can download the ISO for various environments, including KDE Plasma, GNOME, and COSMIC, and follow simple instructions for installation or resetting from a Fedora Atomic-based distribution.
