A recent development by a Meta developer aims to significantly enhance the performance of the Steam Deck, particularly in terms of frame rates. David Vernet, a Linux kernel hacker at Meta, announced new patches for the Linux kernel that focus on reducing stuttering and frame-time spikes on devices powered by AMD APUs, such as the Steam Deck.
The Steam Deck operates on a Linux-based platform called SteamOS, utilizing AMD’s Accelerated Processing Units (APUs). These APUs function under stringent power limits, prompting developers to optimize the software to ensure smooth gameplay. Vernet’s patches leverage the existing amd-pstate driver, which is crucial for managing processor frequency in Linux environments.
The amd-pstate driver features an Energy Performance Preference (EPP) attribute, allowing the system to toggle between maximum performance and battery-saving modes based on software demands. The innovative addition from Vernet introduces a per-core EPP boost. When enabled, it samples processor cores every 10 milliseconds. If a core is found to be busy over 50% of that time, its performance mode is adjusted accordingly, maintaining higher performance until the load decreases.
Benchmarking results highlighted the effectiveness of the new EPP boost mechanism. Testing Civilization VI on a Steam Deck, Vernet observed an impressive 31.8% improvement in the 1%-low frame rate, along with a 4.1% enhancement in p99 frame times, despite the average frame rate remaining stable.
The patches are expected to help a wide array of games on the Steam Deck and other Linux handhelds utilizing AMD APUs, underlining the importance of software optimization in achieving superior gaming experiences.
