Is Linux a Memory-Efficient Alternative? A Look at App Performance Compared to Windows’ Weather App

I was surprised to discover that Microsoft’s Weather app on Windows 11 consumes over 1GB of RAM just to display weather data. In contrast, the GNOME Weather app for Linux uses significantly less—approximately a fifth of that amount. My preferred weather application on Linux, Mousam, only requires around a third of the resources utilized by Microsoft’s app, and it also offers a more appealing design.

Not all Windows 11 users experience the same level of memory usage as reported, but on my low-powered Chuwi laptop, the Weather app consistently hovered around 900MB. This high requirement is surprising, considering that even more complex applications use far less memory.

The reason behind Microsoft’s Weather app’s large memory usage can be traced to its reliance on the WebView2 framework, built on the Chromium engine used in Microsoft Edge. This design not only causes high memory consumption but also integrates ads and sponsored content, diverting focus from usability.

For users on lower-spec devices, using such resource-heavy applications can lead to decreased system performance, as it can push RAM limits and force the operating system to rely on slower storage alternatives.

I decided to investigate how various Linux weather applications measured up against their Windows counterpart. Using Ubuntu 26.04 LTS, I checked several installed apps for memory usage. Results showed Microsoft Weather used a staggering 900MB, while Mousam, Typhoon, and GNOME Weather only needed 290MB, 240MB, and 160MB, respectively.

While these tests weren’t scientifically rigorous, they confirm that Linux weather applications are far more memory-efficient than their Windows counterpart. Even with a modest setup—an Intel m3-8100y processor, 8GB RAM, and 250GB NVMe SSD—Microsoft’s app performed inefficiently.

The findings not only reveal the inefficiency of Microsoft’s Weather app but also highlight a deeper issue. This situation reflects Microsoft’s tendency to prioritize profit through ads over creating optimized applications that value user resources. This makes a compelling case for users to consider switching from Windows to Linux, especially when faced with practical performance challenges.
