AI systems, particularly the GLM-5.3 language model from the Chinese company Z.ai, have recently exposed over 1,000 critical vulnerabilities in key open-source projects, including the Linux kernel. This significant increase in vulnerability detection has elevated the average number of Common Vulnerabilities and Exposures (CVEs) fixed per Linux kernel release to nearly 2,000, a sharp rise from about 500 in previous years.
As Linux kernel maintainer Greg Kroah-Hartman highlighted before the upcoming Kernel Recipes 2026 event in Paris, the tracking and reporting of CVEs have escalated dramatically. From the 6.9 to 6.19 versions, around 500 vulnerabilities were identified on average per release. However, starting with Linux version 7.0, that figure rose to roughly 1,000 CVEs, with the 7.2 release exceeding 1,500.
The vast majority of these reported vulnerabilities are low-priority or linked to outdated drivers and deprecated features, alleviating some immediate concerns. The impressive detection capabilities of AI have thus also led to beneficial cleanup efforts, allowing maintainers to remove several obsolete drivers and the entire ISDN subsystem which had long been associated with numerous CVEs.
Despite the alarming number of 2,000 CVEs in the Linux kernel, it is worth noting that much of the kernel’s expansive codebase, consisting of around 40 million lines, still likely harbors many undiscovered vulnerabilities. Linus Torvalds pointed out issues with managing the kernel’s private security mailing list this past May, indicating that the volume of reports has surged from approximately 2–3 per week two years ago to between 5 and 10 daily in 2026.
