The Asahi Linux project has officially introduced support for Macs featuring the M3, M3 Pro, and M3 Max chips, expanding its operating system to more Apple Silicon desktops. This announcement follows a blog post from late August, where the project hinted at upcoming M3 support. Initially believed to be weeks away, the support has now arrived quickly.
On September 6, a blog post detailed the support for M3-series SoCs, complementing prior compatibility with the M1 and M2 generations of Apple Silicon. However, it should be noted that M3 Ultra support is not yet available, which means some Mac Studio users will be unable to utilize Linux.
The developers have indicated that nearly all features operational on the M1 and M2 platforms function seamlessly on the M3, including webcam functionality, internal microphone access, USB compatibility (up to 10Gb/s), Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, and hardware-accelerated video decoding.
Nevertheless, there are significant omissions. Complete Display Control Protocol (DCP) support and GPU functionalities are still pending. The current release does not support sleep mode due to limitations with the firmware’s framebuffer, a situation expected to improve once full DCP support is integrated.
DCP support is also crucial for HDMI port functionality, which is presently disabled on affected MacBooks until the necessary support is established. Furthermore, work continues on supporting future chips, specifically the M4 and M5 variants.
