GridCraft is an open-source spreadsheet app designed to offer an Excel-like experience across Linux, FreeBSD, macOS, and Windows. Unlike a rebranded version of Excel running through a compatibility layer, it’s a native application written in Rust.
In testing, GridCraft handled large spreadsheets—including one with 1,000 rows—without slowing down. It opened quickly and performed consistently across the platforms tested. The app supports XLSX files, more than 500 calculation functions, charts, pivot tables, automation, and instant undo snapshots.
It also worked with an Excel spreadsheet containing a pivot table, which appeared and functioned as expected. Still, GridCraft is in alpha, so it isn’t a dependable choice for production work yet. It’s sensible to test the app with copies of important files and keep your originals safe.
The main shortcoming is templates. GridCraft includes three sample spreadsheets, but its template tools are limited; there doesn’t appear to be a way to save a workbook as an .xltx template. Saving a CSV in a folder for reuse can serve as a workaround, though it’s not as convenient as a dedicated template feature.
GridCraft isn’t a perfect, one-to-one Excel replacement, but its speed, compatibility, and open-source license make it a promising option for spreadsheet users—especially on Linux. The author plans to keep using it, while waiting for the developers to improve its template support.
