ClamAV 1.5 Launched: Explore the Major New Features of This Open-Source Antivirus Engine

ClamAV has officially launched version 1.5, bringing significant enhancements to this open-source antivirus engine designed to detect threats like trojans, viruses, and malware across various platforms.

Among the key improvements in this release is the implementation of CVD signing and verification utilizing external .sign files, which provide added security by ensuring the integrity of virus database files. Users can now specify an alternative directory for CVD certificates as well.

Another notable feature includes checks to verify if OLE2-based MS Office documents are encrypted. Additionally, there is regex support for the clamd.conf configuration option related to path exclusions during access.

The developers explained that the freshclam utility will now leverage external signature files alongside existing .cvd databases for enhanced update capabilities. A new ‘certs’ directory will be installed in the application configuration directory, with a configurable installation path.

ClamAV 1.5 also introduces features to record URIs found in HTML and PDF files when the generate-JSON-metadata function is activated. This can now be disabled using new options (--json-store-html-uris=no and --json-store-pdf-uris=no) for users preferring to generate metadata without URI records.

Furthermore, the update introduces a mechanism to impose FIPS-like restrictions that disable the use of MD5 and SHA1 cryptographic hashes for verifying digital signatures. This is particularly critical for operations within environments that necessitate FIPS compliance, although ClamAV can still compute MD5 or SHA1 hashes for detection and informational purposes.

In addition to the above, ClamAV 1.5 upgrades its clean-file scan cache to utilize the SHA2-256 algorithm, enhances scanning precision, and introduces new command-line options for hash and file types. Support for extracting malformed ZIP files has also been improved, along with file recognition for certain AI model types.

The release notably enhances compatibility for compiling on Solaris and GNU/Hurd systems and improves linking with the NCurses library. A number of bugs have also been addressed in this version.

Users can download ClamAV 1.5 directly from the official website or via the project’s GitHub page for both source tarballs and binaries suitable for Debian/Ubuntu and Red Hat distributions. ClamAV is also available from the repositories of most popular Linux distributions.
