The Debian Project has released the second Release Candidate (RC2) of the Debian Installer for the upcoming Debian GNU/Linux 13 "Trixie" operating system, expected to launch in late June or early/mid July 2025. This release introduces important updates, including support for rescuing Btrfs systems installed via the Calamares installer.
In addition to Btrfs support, the new installer includes support for installing systemd-cryptsetup alongside cryptsetup-initramfs, as well as compatibility for Apple MTP and Apple SPI keyboards, commonly found on ARM-based laptops like the M1 MacBook Pro and M2 MacBook Air.
The RC2 also introduces several enhancements, such as integrating the drivers/pinctrl/intel into the kernel-image udeb, allowing the installation of shim-signed on AMD64 and ARM64 systems for Secure Boot capability, and implementing a mechanism to ensure that systemd-cryptsetup is available. Furthermore, the installation medium is modified to disable CD-ROM sources if it’s not an actual CD, and it provides better support for recording firmware packages embedded in modified initrd images.
Other notable changes include an automatic setting of force-efi-extra-removable to “true” in certain scenarios, which aids systems where EFI firmware management is inconsistent, and the removal of the wget applet from BusyBox. The installer now uses alternate fonts for improved Japanese rendering.
This Debian Installer Trixie RC2 also bumps the Linux kernel ABI to 6.12.33+deb13 and includes a variety of small adjustments aimed at refining user experience prior to the official release. As always, it’s essential to note that this is a pre-release version and not suitable for production environments.
