The elementary OS team has officially launched elementary OS 8, codenamed "Circe," based on Ubuntu 24.04 LTS. This new version features a modern Pantheon desktop environment and introduces various improvements and functionalities aimed at enhancing user experience.
Built on Ubuntu 24.04 LTS (Noble Numbat) and utilizing the latest Linux kernel version 6.8, elementary OS 8 includes a new Secure Session feature designed to protect user privacy by requiring app consent for system features. The new dock provides improved multitasking capabilities and window management. Additionally, PipeWire has been integrated as the default media server.
Danielle Foré, the lead developer, noted that the Secure Session, powered by Wayland, imposes new restrictions on app functionalities while introducing support for Mixed DPI modes and enhanced multi-touch gesture recognition.
New features also encompass four new FreeDesktop.org portals, which include utilities for color picking, screen capturing, screencasting, and wallpaper selection. The Flatpak Permissions Store has been updated to allow users to easily adjust run-time permissions, enhancing app management.
The AppCenter, elementary OS’s default application store, has introduced a "Made for elementary OS" badge for better app categorization, a sponsorship option for developers, and direct links to app source code for transparency.
On the system management side, driver management and system updates have been moved from the AppCenter to System Settings, where users can opt for automatic updates and will have options for installing updates during system shutdown.
Other significant changes feature a revamped approach to keyboard navigation and screen reader support, a modernized System Settings interface, and the addition of a Quick Settings menu. The Multitasking View now includes a blurred wallpaper effect for a visually appealing experience.
