Kickstarting 2024: SparkyLinux Introduces MLVWM Macintosh-Like WM and Calamares 3.3

The developers of SparkyLinux are starting 2024 with a fresh ISO snapshot of their Debian-based distro hailing from the awaited Debian GNU/Linux 13 “Trixie” OS series.

Fueled by the Linux 6.6 LTS kernel series, SparkyLinux 2024.01 is the initial update of the SparkyLinux Rolling series in 2024, incorporating all package updates from Debian Testing (Debian Trixie) and SparkyLinux Testing repositories as of January 17th, 2024.

A notable feature included in the SparkyLinux 2024.01 release is the inclusion for MLVWM X11 window manager, a Macintosh-like Virtual Window Manager that grants users a classic MacOS desktop experience. Users can set up SparkyLinux with MLVWM via command-line installer.

In addition to MLVWM window manager support, the SparkyLinux CLI installer also now backs more web browsers, such as SRWare Iron, LibreWolf, Midori, Min, Mullvad, Opera, Slimjet, and ungoogled-chromium.

Furthermore, users now receive progress updates when copying files to a disk drive through the SparkyLinux CLI installer. However, the developers have removed the capability to install SparkyLinux with the Btrfs file system on BIOS machines and the XFS file system using the CLI installer.

Nonetheless, it’s still possible to install SparkyLinux with the XFS file system using the updated Calamares graphical installer. This has been updated to the latest Calamares 3.3.1 release in the SparkyLinux 2024.01 snapshot.

Being up-to-date, this is also the inaugural SparkyLinux Rolling update to come with the PipeWire audio server installed as default, replacing PulseAudio. Of course, the latest Pipewire 1.0.1 release is available in this ISO snapshot.

SparkyLinux 2024.01 can now be downloaded from the official website as MinimalCLI, MinimalGUI editions that come with Openbox 3.6.1-11, KDE Plasma editions featuring KDE Plasma 5.27.10 LTS, Xfce which comes with Xfce 4.18, LXQt with LXQt 1.4.0, and MATE that features MATE 1.26.

Being powered by the long-term supported Linux 6.6 LTS kernel series, you have the option to also install the latest Linux 6.7 kernel or the Linux 6.1.73 LTS and Linux 5.15.147 LTS kernels from the SparkyLinux repositories.

MLVWM deserves credit for the images.
