As of today, the Linux 6.15 kernel series has reached its end of life, advising users to upgrade to Linux kernel 6.16. Released on May 25, 2025, Linux kernel 6.15 brought several enhancements, including Rust support for hrtimer and ARMv7, a new setcpuid=
boot parameter for x86 CPUs, and nested virtualization support for VGICv3 on ARM. However, since it is not a long-term support (LTS) branch, its maintenance is coming to a close, with the last release being Linux 6.15.11, published by Greg Kroah-Hartman.
Users are urged to transition to Linux kernel 6.16, which was launched on July 28, 2025. This new version introduces features such as support for Intel Trusted Domain Extensions, USB offload for audio devices, and improved memory allocation policies. The upgrade is now available in the repositories of several distributions, including openSUSE Tumbleweed and Arch Linux, and will soon be available for Fedora users.
It’s important to note that while Linux 6.16 is already out, it is also a short-lived branch. For those seeking long-term support, alternatives include Linux kernel 6.12 LTS, the default kernel in Debian 13 “Trixie”, along with Linux kernels 6.6 LTS and 6.1 LTS.
