Kagi has released a new beta version of Orion for Linux, a WebKitGTK-based web browser adapted from its popular macOS and iOS versions. This v0.4.1 update follows the public beta 0.3.0 released earlier this year, introducing enhanced features and refinements.
Key additions in this beta include private browsing windows, a simple download manager, and a new toolbar overflow menu that helps users manage buttons without cluttering the main interface. The update also brings a notable link preview feature similar to macOS’s ‘Quick Look’, allowing users to view content from links without opening a new tab. Currently, link previews can be accessed via a context menu when right-clicking.
Another significant introduction is Programmable Buttons, enabling users to create custom toolbar buttons that execute scripts or apply specific conditions to web pages. Users can either manually add these buttons or import pre-configured ones from a GitHub repository dedicated to open-source programmable buttons.
The beta also expands support for local sync, allowing users to export key data as a file, beneficial for transitioning data between builds. While cloud synchronization is not yet available, it is planned for future updates.
The beta builds on performance and stability improvements while refining the user interface. Users can expect more fundamental browser functionalities and controls, such as:
To install Orion for Linux, users need to add Kagi’s Flatpak repository, as it isn’t available on Flathub:
flatpak remote-add --if-not-exists orion-beta https://flatpak.orionbrowser.com/orion-beta.flatpakrepo
Followed by the installation command:
flatpak install orion-beta com.kagi.Orion
Updates to future beta releases are available via a terminal command or a GUI package manager.
While Kagi describes this beta as a step closer to being a daily driver, users should be aware that it remains a work-in-progress with potential issues. Feedback can be provided through the Orion feedback site.
