FFmpeg version 8.0, dubbed "Huffman," has been officially released, marking a significant update to this open-source multimedia framework. This version introduces a range of new features including filters, decoders, emcoders, and various enhancements, following the previous release, FFmpeg 7.1, which was unveiled over ten months ago.
Notable features in FFmpeg 8.0 include the enabling of TLS peer certificate verification by default, the addition of an AV1 Vulkan encoder, and hardware acceleration support for VP9 Vulkan and ProRes RAW Vulkan. The update also supports APV encoding through a libopenapv wrapper. New functionalities encompass the encoding of animated JPEG XL with the libjxl library and enhanced support for VVC (Versatile Video Coding) in Matroska (MKV) and Screen Content Coding (SCC) formats.
Several new filters have been incorporated, such as a Whisper filter, a pad_cuda filter, a Colordetect filter, and a vf_scale_d3d11 filter. In terms of decoding capabilities, this update adds support for VVC VA-API, RealVideo 6.0, ADPCM IMA Xbox, G.728, and Sanyo LD-ADPCM decoders, along with a ProRes RAW decoder.
Additionally, FFmpeg 8.0 improves features including libx265 alpha layer encoding, CENC AV1 support in the MP4 muxer, an APV decoder, and raw bitstream muxing and demuxing support for APV. It also offers a hardware decoder and encoder for OpenHarmony.
Among the critical changes, FFmpeg 8.0 has dropped support for OpenSSL 1.1.0 and earlier versions, removed GCC autovectorization on various architectures, redefined the default prediction method for PNG encoding to PAETH, deprecated OpenMAX encoders, and replaced yasm support with nasm.
FFmpeg 8.0 is now available for download, including updated components such as libavutil 60.8.100, libavcodec 62.11.100, libavformat 62.3.100, libavdevice 62.1.100, libavfilter 11.4.100, libswscale 9.1.100, and libswresample 6.1.100. Users can access the latest version from the official FFmpeg website.
