The Asahi Linux project is on the verge of a significant milestone, as it prepares to release a version that supports Apple’s M3 chip architecture, with further efforts towards M4 and M5 also underway.
Asahi Linux aims to provide a native Linux experience on Apple Silicon’s ARM-based chips. Following a gradual development process, the project is nearing completion of its M3 support. Recent updates reveal substantial progress in refining functionality, especially with issues that previously hindered performance.
In a blog post dated August 26, the Asahi team discussed advancements in their efforts to support the M3 architecture. Earlier this year, they demonstrated an early version running on M3 Macs, which has since seen major improvements. The team indicates they are close to finalizing this support, promising more information in the near future.
The technical journey for M3 has involved overcoming various challenges, such as modifying the webcam image signal processor, which parallels the architecture of the previous M2 chip. A notable improvement was the resolution of a skipped initialization error impacting the M3 Max, resolved with a new driver. Additionally, changes to the built-in microphone functionalities were required, further enhancing overall performance.
The transition from an Apple-specific USB controller chip also introduced complexities, necessitating reverse engineering efforts to adapt to the new hardware. Expectations of working firmware with the GPU and display controller are now tied to specific macOS versions, reflecting the ongoing challenges of aligning Linux support with Apple’s ecosystem.
While M3 efforts are commendable, the team has not lost sight of the future. Work on M4 and M5 support is already in progress. However, the developers acknowledge the inherent difficulties, such as a problematic WFI issue and changes in Apple’s NVMe controller firmware affecting builds for these new chips.
Despite these hurdles, the developers have made strides with M4 support and have even commenced early development on M5. They have managed to fix issues related to PCIe support, leading to improved Linux device enumeration on this architecture.
