The Linux Foundation has launched the OpenSharing Project, aimed at establishing vendor-neutral protocols for sharing AI data and assets among organizations. This initiative is in collaboration with Databricks, which will help develop a system for safely exchanging AI models, agent skills, and unstructured data, leveraging the existing Delta Sharing protocol.
As companies rush to adopt AI technologies, a common challenge has emerged: the lack of standardized methods for sharing information efficiently. The Linux Foundation asserts that many organizations are currently dependent on point-to-point integrations and proprietary marketplaces to manage this exchange. The OpenSharing Project aspires to create a secure, unified protocol for cross-organizational data sharing, enabling enterprises to publish AI assets and data that can be accessed regardless of the underlying platform.
According to Linux Foundation CEO Jim Zemlin, “OpenSharing addresses a critical need for a common, vendor-neutral framework that enables organizations to exchange AI assets securely and interoperably across platforms and ecosystems.” By fostering collaborative technology development through the foundation, the initiative aims to accelerate AI innovation on a larger scale.
Databricks CTO Matei Zaharia added that the OpenSharing concept builds on the successes of the Delta Sharing protocol by promoting an open approach to the entire AI stack. This development will enhance interoperability for users of Apache Iceberg and on-premises solutions, which marks a significant step towards establishing an open foundation for the evolving agentic era.
The OpenSharing Project is the second initiative announced by the Linux Foundation within a week, complemented by the launch of the Tokenomics Foundation, which seeks to create industry standards for AI infrastructure economics.
